  • Maine has two ponds called "Unknown Pond," both near the border of Canada, but on opposite sides of the state.

Fun histories encountered while researching:

Butter Hill:

"About 1820 the area framers used to gather in the gereal store to talk, and among them was a man who lived on this hll. As he was always stealing from the store, the owner decided to lay a trap for him by placing some fresh butter so that it was accessible and told a number of the other men of his plan. As this man started to leave the store, he slipped the butter under his cap. Being hemmed in by the other men and not wanting to look suspicious, he continued sitting next to the stove, where the storekeeper had a hot fire burning. Before long the butter began to stream down his face as it melted under his heavy cap. From then on his home was called Butter Hill."

Mars Hill:

"In 1790, a British Chaplain read a verse in the Bible which mentioned a Mars Hill to a survey crew in the area."

Alley's Point:

"For a captain Alley who retired there. It was rumored that he was an ex-pirate and was buried in the uniform of of a British Naval Officer whom he had forced to walk the plank."

Jugtown Plains:

"Once in Johnathon Smith's mill yard, men were engaged in a shooting match while drinking whiskey to 'sharpen their shooting.' As the match progressed, the jug of whiskey was left on a stump and before long it was accidentally shot."

Tumbledown Dick Mountain:

"Either a horse, a shepherd, or an Indian named 'Dick' fell to their death in folklore"

Yagger:

"Tradition says that during the Revolutionary War some German soldiers were hunting here and called themselves 'Jaeger,' the German word for 'hunter'. 'Yagger' is an approximate pronunciation of the German word."

Buffalo:

"For men who let their hair and beards get shaggy in cold weather for warmth and were called 'buffalo' by a storekeeper.
